Fatales v. Dishes 70 - 72
Our last bout at the Western Fair was a tight one, and I watched the whole thing from the scoreboard. Magically, it was the first time nothing at the scoreboard went wrong! I should say, not magically, but because of our Head Ref, Ormedrebel (whose name I have never quite grasped) came up with a killer system that basically worked out all the bugs.
I'd missed a lot of practices because I found out in October that I'm knocked up, so I expected some questions and I decided not to lie. Reactions from the derby girls were mixed. Lots of congratulations, but also some sadness because it means I'll be off my skates for 9 months, and probably not back to practice for about 12 -- if you're my baby and you're reading this, that's okay with me, cause you are more important than derby!
Nevertheless, derby gets under your skin, and it's amazing how much you want to stay involved even when you can't skate. This accounts for people like Dawn Kashane coming to all our practices and watching from the sidelines while she's off with her leg injury. And it accounts for me getting a documentary crew from Ryerson to come and tape our practice for a short film!
A friend of a friend contacted me on facebook to see if our team would be ready and willing. I said yes before even mentioning it to our league president, Sufferjet. Of course! We would love to be in the documentary! They came down to tape practice on November 19th -- after playing some cat and mouse on the country roads -- and we can't wait to see what they turn out for us.
As for me, I miss the girls. I miss practice. I know I can go and watch, but I also know that now is when to spend my extra time planning, nesting, organizing and baby-proofing. I'm due this coming June, around the 12th or 14th, and it's going to sneak up on me. So, while the girls are huffing it in their freezing cold bunker, I've made the choice to hunker down with my man and make our house ready for the newest member of our family.
That's not to see I don't still have a finger in the derby pie.....
