The turn out for our first annual LOCO Skate-A-Thon was fantastic -- and not fully represented by the picture above. Everyone brought out their families, their kids, their parents, their friends and we had a terrific time. We raised lots of money for the league and enjoyed the beautiful sunny day. Nia Capps is ready to give birth any day and still showed up to show her support, and Vegas worked her butt off getting the meat and corn ready, and veggie burgers for those so inclined. We stuffed a row of picnic tables with salads and desserts that everyone brought -- although people seemed hesitant to try my bright green jello mold :( I had to throw most of it out, very disappointing. Whatever. I'll keep bringing them to every potluck. They're fun to make and I still think they look impressive even if no one will eat them.
I learned a lesson at the Skate-A-Thon: I suck at outdoor skating! I'm also a massive whiner, which made skating next to me pretty miserable for anyone. Most of the girls took off and headed on the mapped out hour-long route, which I had intended to do! However, I just kept falling. A lot. In front of people. Who always asked if I was okay. I was super slow and my back was aching. Look, skating outside is really good for you in derby preparation. It helps you build muscle and agility and everything you need to be good at the sport. But I probably need to start with 15 minute increments and not jump in feet first. I found the paths to be really hard to navigate with their rough texture, cracks, and many slight inclines. I got sick of hearing myself complain!
However, I'd pledged to skate for an hour, so I found a section of the path that I could manage and skated back and forth on it for a while to make up for not skating all the way. Next year I'm going to do the whole route!
The important thing, I think, is that we came together to make our league better. LOCO is full of ladies who really care about making the league as good as it can be, love hanging out together and want to be good at derby. What else could you ask for?

If you only skate for half an hour how will any of the pledgers know? I won't tell them :)-Laurie
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun day! I'm so glad this was one of the last days I was in London. It was great to skate with everyone and I loved talking with everyone at the BBQ. I miss and love my LOCO ladies!! -Knuckle Slamwitch
